If you notice bees, wasps, or hornets hanging around your outdoor AC unit, heat pump, or boiler vent, it may seem like a pest control problem at first. And sometimes, it is. A large, active nest should always be handled carefully and may require a pest control professional. But once insects start building nests in or around your HVAC equipment, it can quickly become more than an insect problem. It can become an equipment problem.

This time of year, bees and other colonizing stingers are busy finding sheltered spots to build nests. Unfortunately, outdoor HVAC equipment offers exactly what they’re looking for: protection from the elements, warmth, and small openings with hidden spaces they can tuck themselves away. Outdoor air conditioning units, heat pumps, vent terminations, control panels, and nearby piping can all become attractive places for nesting insects.
The problem is your HVAC system needs clear airflow, clean components, and safe electrical connections to work properly (and safely!). A nest built in the wrong spot can interfere with all of that.
A small nest near the outside of the unit may not seem like much. However, even a small nest can block airflow, clog coils, or interfere with fan movement. Nest activity also creates debris inside the equipment which builds over time, causing more problems. If airflow is restricted, your system has to work harder than it should. That can lead to poor performance, lower efficiency leading to higher energy costs, overheating, and unnecessary wear on parts. What seemed like a harmless little nest, has now become costly damage.

In some cases, insects can also get into electrical compartments or control areas. That is where an HVAC technician becomes especially important. These spaces should not be opened or handled casually. There may be live electrical components, delicate wiring, and parts that require proper training to inspect safely. Pest control may remove the insects, but they are not there to evaluate whether your AC, heat pump, or boiler venting equipment has been affected.
This is why it makes sense to call your HVAC company when you see bees or wasps building nests around your equipment. We can check whether the nest has caused damage, clean out debris where appropriate, make sure airflow is not being blocked, and confirm the system is running safely and efficiently. If pest control is needed first, we can let you know that too.
Boiler vents are another area to watch closely. If insects build nests around or inside vent openings, they can interfere with proper venting. That can create performance issues and, depending on the system, potential safety concerns. Any blocked vent merits prompt attention.
The best thing homeowners can do is keep an eye on outdoor equipment during spring, summer, and early fall. Look for increased insect activity around your AC unit, heat pump, or vent openings. NEVER poke at the nest, spray chemicals into your equipment, or try to take panels apart yourself. That can be dangerous for you and your system!
If you see bees, wasps, or nests around your outdoor HVAC equipment, give New Energy Solutions a call. We’ll help you figure out whether the equipment needs service, if pest control should be involved, and what needs to happen to keep your equipment protected and in good working order.
